Abstract

Paper aims: This study aims to examine how supply chain collaboration and supply chain decision-making influence smallholder farm performance through supply chain risk management (SCRM) in corn farming under conditions of high uncertainty.

Originality: This study integrates relational (collaboration) and managerial (decision-making) capabilities within a Resource-Based Theory (RBT) framework, positioning SCRM as a mediating operational capability that links supply chain capabilities to performance in smallholder agricultural systems.

Research method: A quantitative approach was employed using survey data from 380 smallholder corn farmers in Gorontalo Province, Indonesia. The data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Strucral Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to assess both direct and indirect relationships among the constructs.

Main findings: The results show that supply chain collaboration has a positive and significant effect on farm performance, while decision-making has no direct significant effect. However, both collaboration and decision-making significantly influence SCRM, which in turn strongly improves performance. SCRM partially mediates the relationship between collaboration and performance and fully mediates the relationship between decision-making and performance.

Implications for theory and practice: This study extends RBT by demonstrating how supply chain capabilities are transformed into performance outcomes through risk management in smallholder agriculture. Practically, improving farm performance requires strengthening collaboration and enhancing SCRM capabilities, while ensuring that decision-making processes are effectively aligned with risk management practices.
